VOICES OF THE LAND
(Re)Weaving Kinship Circles in Pedagogical Practice
PEDAGOGICAL EXPLORATIONS
• Land-kinship in Sḵwx̱wú7mesh ways of knowing
• Pedagogies of place / land as first teacher
• Decolonizing self to decolonize education
DETAILS
This is a land-based professional development event taking place in remote Sḵwx̱wú7mesh territory. Educators will travel by helicopter or boat with Sḵwx̱wú7mesh knowledge-holders and land-based practitioners. Once there, we will gather in circle to share teachings, get to know one another, and explore artistic pathways toward (re)membering our kinship ties with the land.
With artist-guided support, educators will also engage with maker-practices designed for listening to, and gathering sound. Through attuning ourselves to the resonance of place, educators will be asked to create an acoustic ecology weaving of the land they are on.
RESPONSIBILITY OF PARTICIPANTS IN SUPPORT OF:
Itim̓úsem na7 tkwa s7ulh temíxw Film Series
This pro-d event is in support of music/soundscape-creation for the film series Itim̓úsem na7 tkwa s7ulh temíxw (looking in all directions on our land) being produced by Ta na wa Ns7éyx̱nitm ta Snew̓íyelh (Language & Cultural Affairs), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw. This film series is bringing into focus locations of historical and cultural significance to the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh people, from across traditional territory and time.
A responsibility of the participants taking part in this pro-d event is to help record the acoustic ecologies being woven and learned from, so that they may inform and become part of the music and soundscape for each “episode” within Itim̓úsem na7 tkwa s7ulh temíxw.
EXPRESSING INTEREST & COST CONSIDERATIONS
Although financial support is provided, exact cost for participants can only be determined after knowing the approximate number of attendees and their accessibility needs, in order to arrange suitable transportation and safety supports.
To determine this, we ask that you please submit an Expression of Interest if you would like to attend. This form will help us get a better sense of the scale, scope and specific needs for travel and participant support on May 3rd.
We will then reach out to everyone who has submitted an Expression of Interest form with further details provided.
For transparency and consideration, certain factors may require costs ranging from $150-$300 per person. These might include: increased honouraria to additional knowledge-holders; accessibility or accommodation requirements for safety; or travel adjustments due to weather and safety considerations on or leading up to the event-day.
We are committed to minimizing cost barriers; however please explore your funding options if needed.
PLEASE NOTE
An expression of interest does not guarantee participation, it is to inform planning and cost considerations at this time.
